You may have heard that travelling to Iran is dangerous! But Iranviva Team want to assure that it’s completely the opposite. Although the U.S. has recently announced re-imposing sanctions on Iran, the good news is that the world admits Iran as a safe country to travel. According to the 2019 Travel Risk Map, launched by global risk experts International SOS in collaboration with Control Risks, Iran has been admitted as safe as many countries like Australia and most European countries like Sweden and Germany, regarding the security.
This evaluation is based on current threat posed to travelers by political violence (including terrorism, insurgency, politically motivated unrest and war), social unrest (including sectarian, communal and ethnic violence) and violent and petty crime, as well as factors like the robustness of the transport infrastructure, the state of industrial relations, the effectiveness of the security and emergency services and the country’s susceptibility to natural disasters.
In addition, people in Iran are known among the most hospitable people in the world. The Lonely Planet, calls Iranian people as “the friendliest people in the world”. You can have a perfect chat with strangers on the street and be invited for a cup of tea or a family meal. The first reason why most of the tourists, who have visited Iran, love this country so much is its people. So, if you are looking for a great destination for a perfect holiday, why not visiting Iran?!
Iran might be unfairly reputed as a dangerous country to travel to in most western media, and people in the west may have a wrong idea about it, but Iran is described by the travelers to Iran as “the safest country I have ever been to” or even as “much safer than travelling in Europe”, especially for solo female travelers!
How safe is Iran?
Iran reality is entirely different from what media portray. Crimes rate is quite low in Iran, especially toward tourists. It is nothing in comparison with a city like Paris, which is still the first touristic destination in the world. Walking alone, even at night, is quite safe in most parts of major cities in Iran like Tehran, Shiraz, and Isfahan.
Indeed, nightlife in some streets of these big cities is really surprising to many tourists visiting Iran. Lights everywhere, people walking around, hanging out with friends or family in the parks having food together.
Violent crime against foreigners is extremely rare in Iran. Iranians are well reputed for their hospitality, so they take much care of the visitors to Iran. Iranian people feel proud and happy seeing visitors who are enthusiast about Iran culture, and they really like to share it with them.
Don’t worry about getting lost while visiting Iran. It doesn’t take much time before an Iranian comes to you and helps you find the right direction, or even, in some cases, accompanies you to the hotel.
They may also offer their time to help you, share a meal with you, and show you the beauties of their city. While most of the time they are truthful, it is always important to be cautious when talking to strangers!
Since, unfortunately there are not many tourists from other countries in Iran, Iranians get really excited seeing foreigner tourists visiting Iran. So, they are always happy seeing you!
Travelling to Iran as a Solo Female
As we mentioned earlier, travelers to Iran call this country “the safest country I have ever been to”. As a large percentage of visitors to Iran, female tourists say Iran is probably one of the safest countries to travel to. Both women and men in Iran have a tendency to protect women. It is not difficult for a visitor, either, to find some help without even asking for it.
Female tourists need to be more cautious than men during their trips. Women would feel safe in Iran, since most of the physical contacts between men and women are prohibited in public, and most of the public transportation is gender-segregated.

Thanks to the sanctions, most of the tourists in Iran are facing problem dealing with money, as their credit cards (Master Card, Visa Card) are not accepted by any Banks. Tourists should take all money, they need, in cash. This might be difficult for visitors from other countries who are used to paying by their credit cards.
Hopefully, lockers are provided in most hotels, but it’s a good idea to keep it you all the time, using those “secret wallets”. However, as a much better alternative, tourists can use Iran Tourist Cards in Iran. Today, some Persian banks such as National bank of Iran (or called Melli bank in Iran), Pasargad bank and Saman bank provide tourists with Iran tourist card. So you can easily exchange your cash amount into your Iranian credit card.
