US officials have also expressed hope that a New York court will prosecute an art dealer accused of smuggling many of the works.
The art dealer, Sabhash Kapoor, was previously known as the owner of an art gallery in Manhattan and has been in custody in India since 2011. Crimes such as theft and smuggling related to more than 2,500 South Asian historical artifacts target the broker.
Historical artifacts handed over to the Indian Consulate in New York include 235 artifacts discovered in Kapoor warehouses and 13 artifacts seized during further investigations.
These include two bronze sculptures from the twelfth and sixteenth centuries, valued at $ 4 million and $ 437,500, respectively.
