Hormozgan Province
Hormozgan Province is located to the north of the Strait of Hormuz. The province, with an area of 70,697 square kilometers, is bordered by Kerman Province to the North and Northeast, Fars and Bushehr provinces to the West and Northwest, Sistan and Baluchestan Province to the East, and the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf to the south. Hormozgan Province is located in southern Iran, and experiences a very hot and humid climate.
Bandar Abbas
Bandar Abbas is the provincial capital of Hormozgan. Bandar Abbas is the second largest city in southern Iran and is also one of the most economically important cities.
History of Bandar Abbas
This city is not a very old city and it dates back to about four hundred years ago. However, according to some documents, indigenous people had been living in this region centuries BC, and sailing was widespread then. According to the researchers, sailing in this area dates back to the era of the Medes, but what is documented is that it dates back to the reign of Alexander the Macedonian in Iran.
The original ancient name of this port was ‘Camaro’ that means ‘Crab’. After the invasion of the port by the Portuguese, the Port was named ‘Gamberon’ that was probably the Portuguese pronunciation of ‘Camaro’.
In Safavid era, Shah Abbas managed to expel the Portuguese from the port with the help of the British army. As a result, the name of the port changed into Bandar Abbas (Abbas Port) in 1622.

Kish Island
Kish is an oval-shaped island in the Persian Gulf which is one of the major tourist destinations in Iran. This beautiful island shares maritime boundaries with the country of Iran to the north, the United Arabic Emirates to the south, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia to the West, and it is bordered by the Strait of Hormuz to the East. Kish Island is also Iran’s first Free Trade Zone.
This island dates back to the Achaemenid era and even earlier. According to the historical documents, Persians have long been the owners and rulers of this beautiful island.
Kish Island has long been of interest to tourists, for its coral beaches, crystal clear water, pleasant weather in winter, historical monuments such as Kariz Underground City, and other tourist attractions like Dolphin Park and Aqua sports.
The average temperature in this mysterious island is 27 degrees Celsius all year round.
Qeshm Island
Another beautiful island in the Persian Gulf is Qeshm Island which is the largest island in the Persian Gulf.
Qeshm Island shares maritime boundaries with the city of Bandar Abbas and parts of Bandar Lengeh to the north, Hormuz Island to the northeast, Larak Island to the East, Hengam Island to the south, and Greater and Lesser Tunbs and Abu Musa islands to the southwest.
Qeshm Island is a hot and dry region of Iran, with the average temperature of 26 degrees Celsius throughout the year. The highest temperature on the island is 46 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature is 16 degrees Celsius.
Due to the unique natural beauties, Qeshm Island is one of the tourist destinations in Iran. Among the tourist attractions of the island are the Portuguese Castle, Valley of Stars, Salt dome, Geopark, and Noopak Crocodile Park.

Another island of Hormozgan Province is Hengam Island that is located to the south of Qeshm Island.
