The capital of Hormozgan province is Bandar Abbas. The province is located in the north of the Strait of Hormuz. The area of Hormozgan province is 70,697 square kilometers. The province is bordered by Kerman province to the north and northeast, by Fars and Bushehr provinces to the west and northwest, by Sistan and Baluchestan province to the east, and by the Oman Sea and the Persian Gulf to the south.
Bandar Abbas is the capital of Hormozgan province and is approximately at the sea level. The original name of this city was Gambron Harbor. After the Portuguese army was defeated by Shah Abbas in 1622, the city was renamed Bandar Abbas.
