Hormozgan Province is located to the north of the Strait of Hormuz. The province, with an area of 70,697 square kilometers, is bordered by Kerman Province to the North and Northeast, Fars and Bushehr provinces to the West and Northwest, Sistan and Baluchestan Province to the East, and the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf to the south. History of Bandar Abbas
This city is not a very old city and it dates back to about four hundred years ago. However, according to some documents, indigenous people had been living in this region centuries BC, and sailing was widespread then. According to the researchers, sailing in this area dates back to the era of the Medes, but what is documented is that it dates back to the reign of Alexander the Macedonian in Iran.
The original ancient name of this port was ‘Camaro’ that means ‘Crab’. After the invasion of the port by the Portuguese, the Port was named ‘Gamberon’ that was probably the Portuguese pronunciation of ‘Camaro’.
In Safavid era, Shah Abbas managed to expel the Portuguese from the port with the help of the British army. As a result, the name of the port changed into Bandar Abbas (Abbas Port) in 1622.
